Excellent work! One note: Vasque is a Red Wing Shoe brand, along with RWS, Irish Setter, Worx, and Red Wing Casuals. They probably deserve their own constellation.

Black Diamond has acquired several brands, some of which still exist on the market, others don't: Ascension, ACE Climbing Gear (Conrad Anchor's hardware line), and Bibler tents

It would be interesting to illustrate reps in this diagram. Even more interesting to "put it in motion" when a company gets a new sales manager and surrounds him/herself with former pals. OR when they feel like sandals are a obvious conflict of interest with trail shoes. Or...gosh, so many fun scenarios! It's a dynamic industry, isn't it?
This could be like a new and twisted board game.

OH! And let's not forget the oh-so-natural acquisition of Lendal Paddles by JOI in the last couple years.

OR owns Wild Roses. Isis is still independent. Nau is history, thankfully. Petzl bought Rock Exotica. Trango bought Stonewear, some of Splitter, eGrips, Flashed. The French companies are so inbred it's hard to keep them straight. Salewa = Dynafit and Silvretta.
Looks like you'll need a bigger chart ;-)

Posted by: D Winter | Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 02:28 PM
General Electric owns eVent. Don't think they bought pertex yet.

Asolo owns Lowe Alpine. Lowa owns X-socks? Other independents: Wild Things, Feathered Friends, Western Mtneering, Hilleberg, Darn Tough, Integral Designs. Patagonia killed Lotus and WaterGirl so I guess that doesn't count.

Back in the late 90's when I was a snowboard rep, creativity, innovation and energy were the order of the day, and there were over 200 companies in the market. Now there are less than 20.
The same thing is now happening to the outdoor market, just more gradually due to its scale and the fact that it is less seasonally dependent.
I wouldn't be surprised if it shakes out to 12 behemoths by the end of the consolidation.

Who own's Moonstone these days? Is it Pacific Trail?
Posted by: K Fritzsche | Friday, May 23, 2008 at 09:37 PM
What's a Moonstone? ; )
Last we heard, the brand is sitting in a drawer at Columbia HQ...
Posted by: The Piton | Sunday, May 25, 2008 at 08:42 AM
I think a Moonstone is that large, goofy, rock that sits outside Michael Duffy's office window at Kokatat World HQ.
